This festival sees a plethora of literary events taking place in St Ives, from recordings to talks and from workshops to poetry readings. Every afternoon and evening you can pick from a wide variety of performances and seminars and when the weather is lovely (which it usually is at this time of year) a lot of the events take place outside; it’s a beautiful place to be whether you’re an avid library lover or wannabe writer and for the next festival we hope to be doing some events in-house so watch this space.

In aid of the charity Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) St Ives Surf School host the annual fancy dress surfing competition on Porthmeor Beach. Sponsored by Red Bull UK and Rhythm Europe it is now in its 6th year and is getting bigger and better every time.
Every year Cohort hosts a pre-Swell Board Shoot Out event where we raise money for SAS and do silly things in the name of said charity. We’ll be doing the same this year on Saturday 10th June and everyone is invited!
A fantastic Cornish tradition (annual).
Celebration of midsummer – the Feast of St. John – with bonfires, flaming tar barrels and burning torches was widespread in Cornwall until the late 19th Century. In 1991 this tradition was revived and nearly 25 years later tens of thousands of people line the main street of Penzance which becomes a huge market place for the day, with traders selling all manner of goods as well as food from all around the world. Each year sees the election of the Mock Mayor of the Quay and a spectacular fireworks display.
Read more about it on their website and if you missed this year then plan for next!
This celebration of all things beer and cider related has been going 3 years. Run by St Ives Brewery the festival takes place at The Guildhall, just a 30 second walk (or stagger) from Cohort.
There’s a £5 entry fee which includes a free branded beer glass and doors are open from 5pm – 12pm on Friday and 12am – 12pm on Saturday.
Plan this into your trip!
Over 200 events took place last year with something for everyone. The St Ives September Festival is two weeks of great music, exhibitions, walks, talks, workshops, films, comedy, theatre, plays, stories and poetry.
St Ives’ largest venue – The Guildhall – is just a 30 second walk from Cohort with other festival venues no more than a 10 minute walk away. The town comes alive during the festival with street performers on every corner and lots of free events for those of you on a budget who just want to soak up the atmosphere.

Throughout December the town comes alive with events. Watch Santa’s arrival by RNLI lifeboat into the harbour, accompanied by reindeers and a parade. Enjoy all the shop window displays as they compete to win ‘Best Winter Window’ and get involved in Christmas workshops put on by galleries throughout the town. This is all accompanied by great, live music in the pubs and carol concerts in the local churches.
Every Saturday throughout December Cohort will be hosting Santa’s Grotto so bring your children (and children bring your parents) up the Stennack to find Santa’s kingdom.
Visit the St Ives in December website for more details.
