New Years Eve in St Ives

November 9th, 2015

There is no denying it, St Ives is THE place to be on New Years Eve. The third biggest street party after London and Edinburgh (allegedly): If you’re not in fancy dress you are definitely the odd one out!

Atmosphere in the streets of St Ives

The atmosphere is friendly and trouble-free whether you’re with a family, in a group or couple on your own. People in all manner of costumes spill out onto the streets from all the pubs, bars, restaurants and cafes. Wander around and take photos of the amazing efforts people have gone to.

Fancy dress in St Ives

You can see from the photos the extent people go to… and this is EVERYONE! We’ve said it once but we’ll say it again – you will be in a very small minority if you do not dress up! If you’ve left it to the last minute don’t worry, for the month of December every charity shop and second hand shop will be selling fancy dress gear and you’ll have no trouble finding something. There are 3 or 4 shops within a few minutes walk from Cohort.

Over the past few years we’ve seen Mary Poppins & Bert, the Minions, Willy Wonka and the Oompa Loompas, human Christmas trees, the 118 guys, gorillas, The Incredibles, bananas, cowboys (and girls), pirates, Russell Brand, the Droogs, various characters from Toy Story, Darth Vader, C-3PO, and lots of people in drag – and that’s to name but a few…

Head out around 5/6pm for family time or start your journey slightly later (around 9pm) for the more serious party-goers and risque costumes.

Eating in St Ives on NYE

All the restaurants and cafes are open but don’t expect to walk in on the night and get a seat (even at Pizza Express). If you want to eat out then book ahead! Book weeks ahead if you can… the popular, beach side restaurants are full by mid-December.

If you want to wing-it then never fear – there are street carts selling all kinds of scrummy, warming food and all the pasty and fish ‘n’ chip shops are open and doing a roaring trade. You won’t starve!

Fireworks at midnight

There is a fabulous firework display at the Harbour Beach at midnight.

It can be seen from either the Harbour Beach (if you want a great, close-up view) or Porthminster Beach if you fancy enjoying it from a distance. The display lasts around 10 minutes and is definitely the highlight of the evening.
